add an optional cap to the safety buffer
This is very similar to the RetroRatchet idea, and it is trying to combat the same problem (too much safety buffer), but I believe a simple cap on the safety buffer (which has been suggested in the RetroRatchet thread) is the better solution.
So for example, I have a goal to go cycling 50km/week, but I don't want to do that all in one day because I want to make a habit out of it, then I could put the cap at two or three days of safety buffer. Then if I cycle 50km in one day, the safety buffer would not become 6 days longer, but it would cap out at 3 days, giving me enough motivation to go cycling again in the coming days even though I already reached the theoretical goal of 50km/week.
We do this now! It’s a premium feature – with
Plan Bee beeminder.com/premium – and it does exactly as suggested in this idea :)

I see in my account that this exists now, but is greyed out as not for newbies? how long must someone be on beeminder to use this? I like this idea better than retro-ratchet, which eliminates the buffer altogether, I would like to limit the buffer automatically to a specific amount as this looks like it would do, a week for most goals, but maybe longer for weight loss.
