Subgoals: children of supergoals
We should be able to have goals within goals.
Let's say my goal is "be a week ahead on all my classwork."
It would be nice to be able to say, "JAVA: The complete reference; finish unit 1 in 10 days" or "Differential Equations exam, have 50 study sessions before final exam".

Are you thinking just in terms of grouping related goals together? We did recently add a very crude approximation of that: you can now partition goals into those you currently care about and those you don’t currently care about.

1) Done. Eg, http://bmndr.com/meta/uvi
2) The above would've made sense as a separate feedback item (if it weren't already done! great minds think alike :)) but discussions like this in the comments are fine too.

Ah, indeed, I just realized that my "alphabetization" wasn't actually true. :)
In the meantime, for subgoals, I've just been creating a mindmap externally with links to each of my branched goals. I thought this might provide some inspiration on a potential solution.
I had a question and then a "meta-question" of sorts:
1) For convenience, it may be helpful to register a new domain that makes accessing goals easier. Some analog of bit.ly that would render navigation easier. (for instance, bmndr.com/user/goal would be brilliant)
2) Do you prefer making multiple suggestions for these sort of queries? Or is posting them as comments fine (for your workflow)?

Hmm, the prefix trick would work nicely if we sorted alphabetically... :)
There's another feedback item about how best to sort. Maybe we should let you choose, though that involves adding clutter to the interface (there aren't just columns you can click on in the gallery to re-sort). -

Ah, as to your second comment, not yet. We have a crude API in private beta but don't have goal creation available as part of it yet. We'll hurry!

Also, grouping is not already _that_ difficult, considering one can just append [prefix] to the title of the goal, exploiting the alphabetization.

Do you have any ideas on what one can do in the meantime with such mini-goals? In particular, goals due <10 days. }
I've been using Excel to plot "stats" on (virtually) all of my activities (including such mini-goals), and I love seeing all my cumulative "data", as I suspect many do.
Any suggestions on this?

Ah, this is smart. (Disregard my comment about grouping goals -- this is a much more powerful idea.)
Just streamlining the process of actually creating goals is also a good idea. We'll keep thinking about that. Thanks so much these suggestions!

Hello Dr. Reeves, and thank you for your speedy response.
In school, (and I suspect most other long term projects), many mini-goals manifest, in the form of assignments.
Is there a way that we can add these mini-goals without making them individual goals?
The interface would easily get cluttered if I made individual goals for each assignment, and I would not be able to prioritize each goal. In particular, I could not prioritize (in terms of prominence in the UI), a long-term goal, like say, "write 500 words of dissertation per day, due in 1 year" vs. "problem set #43, due in 3 days".
Moreover, it is somewhat difficult (I've just started using this today, so perhaps I'm wrong) to create many goals at once. It would be helpful to have some syntax where I could create by batch 100 goals in text.
For instance, a syntax like:
title:type:duedate:weeklyrate:{{additional parameters, I haven't memorized all of them}}
could be easily copypasted from Excel, allowing for streamlined goal creation. Is there a way this can be done already?

The supergoal should be a "composite" metric of all subgoals.
If have 3 subgoals, and you've completed:
100% of subgoal 1
100% of subgoal 2
50% of subgoal 3The supergoal, (assuming these are equally weighted), should be able to say that you are (100+100+5)/3% done.
This is related to the proposition about folders for goals, except that the folder itself represents a supergoal that displays progress itself.
I have many "subprojects" in school, and making them individual goals is time-consuming. Any suggestions on even a workaround are much appreciated.
