Allow the deletion of new goals
I find that sometimes I have what I think is a great idea for a goal. So I create it, and get going. And within a day, or maybe two, it becomes clear that the goal is poorly thought out.
At the moment, there's nothing I can do about it! My current approach is to enter some dummy "safe" (enough so I wont derail in a week), mark the goal for archival, and then send it to the bottom of my goals screen. And then I have to wait 7 days for it to vanish. In the mean time I create a new goal that is better thought out than the original.
I understand your concerns about not wanting to make it too easy to delete a goal. Especially a derailed goal. But I think there's a legitimate use case here.
In fact, I will share an experience with you! A few weekends ago, I realised that a lot of my goals were poorly thought out. So I spent the weekend coming up with better ways to measure what I was actually trying to measure. (I had originally put too much focus on proxy measurements. And had started to optimise for them!)
Unfortunately, because the whole re-configuration is such a faff (intentionally so) I ended up declaring bankruptcy, and allowed all of my goals to derail. (Note that before this point, I was on target with them. I had just decided that I wanted to measure things in a new way.)
Now, the money that cost me is not really an issue. I'm quite happy to support you guys! But, the negative consequence for me was that I had a "oh, what the heck!" week where I did whatever I wanted while I waited for the goals to expire and vanish.
Of course, on some level, I wanted to do this. I could have just created new goals, and dealt with the screen full of new and old half-expired goals. But I guess I was looking for an excuse. Bad me! slaps wrist
Anyway. I know that the plural of "anecdote" isn't "data". But perhaps this is useful for you anyway. :)

Very well argued! How does this sound: https://trello.com/card/archive-vs-delete-new-goals/4f079dbc30a67d1864012d6b/619
