I think we can make this kind of thing smarter but I’m going to decline it for now because it’s surprisingly tricky. The reason it causes problems to be more forgiving about the format of datapoints in emails is that the bot can’t always tell where the stuff you typed ends and where your email signature begins. So if we try to be more forgiving about the format then parts of people’s signatures end up getting parsed as datapoints and it’s a mess.

  2. Current server side implementation is slow, render the graphs using html5 canvas (all mayor browsers support it). You can also add interactivity to the graph this way (see: github network graph).

If you need any help or have any doubts with the implementation, let me know.

I’m closing this to free up votes since there’s a similar suggestion that’s now the top item. Really useful comments here though that we’re discussing. Thanks everyone!

  3. -- Of course, you will also want to suggest in the README that people increase the value of $gap in settings.pl once they've got the hang of TagTime.

We really do need to make TagTime friendlier for new users – but I’m worried this would result in lots of people not changing it at all. Maybe we should add a tutorial that automatically ends?

  5. Allow higher starting fees

I want the added pressure of real money loss hanging over my head - if I didn't I wouldn't be here. I've been nailing my weight loss goal for 2.5 months (Yay me! But, I just got dumped, so... we'll see. Also, helooo ladies!), but I want to get hit with $25 or so if I miss, not $5 the first time and then some high-school algebra lesson the second time.

You can totally have a higher pledge amount for the low, low price of $15! :) Namely, chalk up the initial $5 and $10 derailments to the cost of the service and then you’ll be at $30 like you really want.

It sounds tongue-in-cheek but that’s in fact exactly our business model. We make almost all our money on the $5 and $10 derailments. People seem happy to pay those as part of the cost of figuring out realistic goals, and then it gets actually motivating, which of course is where the real value of Beeminder is.

Very eager to hear more feedback about this. Would it feel a lot better to just pay a monthly subscription and then be able to choose your pledge amount? (We’ve been talking about doing that for a long time but have been experimenting with the way the pledge schedule works instead.)

  6. I count six safe days on this goal. Beeminder says that I have three hundred and sixty two.

Not that I'm complaining. =^D. Just filing a bug report.

  7. I use beeminder to incentize my study time and sometimes I take care of 4 hours worth of class material and don't have to do anything with that class for a couple days. I'd like to only be reminded via text or email if that task enters the organge or red zone and not get notices telling my over the road I am.

  9. When runners are trying to set personal records, they frequently run with a pacer. In dog racing the dogs chase an artificial rabbit. Etc. There are many metaphors that are appropriate here. The ability to superimpose a secondary, more difficult goal, on top of an existing "minimum" goal could be similarly motivational. Add a little carrot to the stick while pushing yourself past the comfort zone.

I posted about this as a comment on another proposal, but I saw that it was already closed so I wasn't sure if you'd read the comment I made there.

Sorry to just now reply to this ancient suggestion! Our current feeling is that this is not so necessary given that you can continually adjust how ambitious the goal is (using the Road Dial). Eager to hear if you think that doesn’t quite capture your proposal!

  11. Beeminder is great for stuff that needs to happen every day, but for stuff that is more about sporadic large chunks of time it doesn't work so well. For example, if I set a 15 hours a week goal and tend to spread this out with 5 hours 3 days a week, I'll quickly run off Beeminder's smooth daily ramp. It would be nice if Beeminder understood this kind of chunkiness.

We very much disagree about this and hope we can convince you! Beeminder allows brilliantly for chunkiness of time. You just have to pay attention to the number of Safety Buffer days you have left. So if you are doing your chunk of work for the week and want to make sure that you can last 7 days before doing more, just make sure you have 7 days of safety buffer. Let your road be flat for a week initially if you want to make sure you can establish such a safety buffer. (And see the other Feedback item I just responded to about how we won’t be imposing that initial week of flat spot, but you can still choose to have it.)

The beauty of the yellow brick road is that it guarantees that you will maintain the overal average that you want to maintain — like 15 hours…

  12. Especially for "chunky" activities, I don't want daily emails, but I do want a reminder email if I'm in danger of getting off my road!

With our current focus on commitment contracts we like the simplicity of just one thing per graph. There’s probably a way to have the best of both worlds but we’re putting this on the back burner till we think of how. Ideas welcome, as always!
